However, having an only child doesn’t have to be a negative. Many parents, having only one child, feel bad thinking that “he will be alone in life”. 1. Let no one call you a spoiled brat

Many people think that because they are an only child, they automatically become “spoiled children”, but nothing further from reality. People can label only-children as “selfish”, “naughty” or “narcissistic”, however, they can’t be more wrong. This will depend on the values ​​that are transmitted at home.

The fact that your child is unique doesn’t mean he should be spoiled, so you should teach him not to let anyone label him that way.  It is education and discipline at home that can make a child selfish or not.  It is necessary for your child to learn to ignore these comments, and to know who he is and what he is worth, showing the world what kind of person he really is.

2. The world does not revolve around you

When there is more than one child in the family, it is possible that there is competition for the attention of their parents, but when there is only one child, it is possible that the parents do not realize that their attention is totally on their child, without any effort for him. . It is necessary to teach children without siblings that their needs are not always the priority, because they are not the center of the universe.

It is important to teach humility to children who are only children, teach them to know how to wait, to enjoy experiences, and not to give too much value to material things… Teach lessons about frustration, and that things don’t always turn out as expected. 3. Friendships can be as strong as in a relationship with a sibling

There are friendships that can be felt as if they were true siblings. When you find these friendships, you must take good care that they last forever.

4. Children with siblings get bored too

Children who don’t have siblings think they’re more bored because they don’t have anyone to play with. But in reality, it doesn’t always have to be that way. Boredom periods are normal for all children, both with siblings and without them. Also,  boredom is not a negative as it challenges creativity and can make children discover their true interests.

They say that children who are only children are more successful because their parents can invest more resources in them, but there are also those who think they are not so emotionally stable. The truth is, there shouldn’t be these kinds of debates, because both children who have siblings and those who don’t  are what they are: people. People with their own idiosyncrasies. 

There is no research to show what is the best or worst way to structure a family. A family can be bigger or smaller. With more or less children, however, what matters is taking care of the family, taking care of its members, teaching good values ​​and happiness, together with a good emotional bond. Children who are only children should know that they, too, are part of a wonderful family.
