The Brothers Grimm and the Creation of Stories

Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786, respectively. Since that time, more than two hundred years have passed, yet his compilations of classic tales still continue to be read hundreds of times by children’s audiences.

Both brothers are among the first short story compilers, as well as being among the best known in history. In their time, all these stories were transmitted and told orally, as writing was not yet present as a form of transmission.

The vast majority of stories compiled by the Brothers Grimm have been translated into over a hundred different languages, and have nothing to do with their adaptations for the screens we talked about at the beginning.

However, some aspects have changed in these stories, as the Grimm brothers used a lot of violence and cruelty in the original stories, often inappropriate for the little ones. So, over time and the appeals, they finally gave up and created versions that were much more suitable for children.

Cinderella

The best-known glass slipper in history, the most feared midnight chimes, the most magical fairy godmother in the history of tales, very evil sisters and a stepmother, and one of the best-known princesses in history are the elements that make up Cinderella , one of the Brothers Grimm’s most famous tales.

One of the best-known traditional classic tales that stars a girl who stands out for her red hood. A story with a much-needed moral  to explain to little ones why we shouldn’t trust people we don’t know.

John and Mary

Hansel and Gretel  is another of the stories compiled by the Brothers Grimm in which  we can see the “cruelty” of the writer brothers. After all, the witch locks children in a cage after fawning over them with sweets because she wanted to eat them.

Snow White  is  one of the most popular German legends in the world. Several adaptations have been created throughout history. However, in all of them, the protagonists are a sweet girl and seven hardworking dwarfs. The witch’s cruelty and malice are also present in all the stories.

The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats

Although much less famous than all the classic tales above, this tale is also known and used among elders to explain to little ones the  importance of dangers with unknown people. Also, children love stories starring animals and this is one of them.

Sleeping Beauty

This classic tale is one that has had more versions throughout history. However, the classic story as we know it today was created by Charles Perrault, another of the great creators of children’s literature.

Even so, the current version of  Sleeping Beauty that we know today also includes elements created by the Brothers Grimm, and thus  part of their attribution is also their work.
