Are There Rules For Planning A Baby Shower?

Are there rules for planning a baby shower?

The baby shower is a beautiful tradition of family origin in which mothers-to-be are showered with gifts for their on-the-go baby. Each location where it is held has its own variations, but from the beginning it was regarded as an exclusive celebration for women who gathered to share their wisdom about motherhood.

Over time, this celebration has included new customs according to the culture of each region, becoming a welcoming activity where the protagonists are the mother and her future baby. Although each family plans in its own way, it is common for some mothers to be taken in by certain rules when planning a baby shower.

So, when planning a baby shower, you must sometimes include themes and activities that are common to the majority ; but they are not mandatory at all. For example, it is believed that at one time it was a celebration that only applied to the firstborn; but as we know, they are currently planned for each new member of the family.

We can talk about cases in which the same mother celebrates several baby showers, with the father’s family, with the mother, with co-workers, etc…  The purpose of this party is to fill in details for the mother, bring presents for the baby and spend a nice time to hail the precious moment.

Why is there a guide to planning the baby shower?

As we said, the baby shower has a clear purpose: to celebrate the baby’s arrival. That is, there should not be specific rules on how the celebration should be done ; in other words, what should not be lacking is a happy mother with her baby in her womb.

From now on, each baby shower doesn’t have to be like the others; all families have their own customs and each one plans according to its own interests. So the question remains the same: Why should I look for a guide?

The key to this issue is that perhaps in certain regions there is not much tradition about this festival. It is common that in some countries, this practice is just beginning to be adopted and, therefore, we allow ourselves to be filled with advice on the subject; both less attractive and viable.

It  is also common that we are trying to change the tradition a little, especially as times have changed and it is already necessary to incorporate new things. For example, the fact that men in the family cannot participate is something that is starting to drastically reverse.

But one thing is certain, for a baby shower to work as such, it must be planned. This party should have details that set it apart and the activities should be focused on the baby and the mother; otherwise, it can pass like any other celebration.

What details are relevant to the baby shower?

The organization is a key element in making this party ; it is usually a family initiative, where the mother-to-be is the main organizer. Godmothers, grandmothers, aunts and mother’s friends are mostly other partners at these parties.

General recommendations on this topic are focused on the following: this is the baby’s first celebration, so we want it to be a beautiful memory. It is advisable to choose a beautiful place and decorate the best you can, taking care to highlight baby details, usually in the color that identifies the child’s gender.

Other elements that can be incorporated are:

  • Food, snacks and cocktails ; these can be traditional foods. There’s no need to overdo it, just share some rich dishes.
  • Usually the gifts are the guests who bring them, but remember that we can play prize games for them. Remember that any help is appreciated and attendance is most important at family gatherings; so it is not mandatory that you bring us a gift.
  • Regards and thanks. The importance of this meeting is to celebrate an event that is priceless; therefore, it is recommended to emphasize good memories. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, include most of the guests, and ask for a dedication for your baby. Organize a book for them to write good wishes and make thank you cards.
