There can be many myths surrounding this issue. But there are many people who claim that some foods can induce labor.
Can certain foods induce labor?

Although there is not enough scientific basis for this, there may come a time when the mother decides to try to help with the birth, as it is taking longer than expected.

Is it true that certain foods can induce labor? Many experienced women think so. Others who are not so expert want it to be true and are willing to try. If you dare to try, below are some “recipes” to get that stimulation you are looking for.

1. Spices and aromatic herbs

This is a well-tested idea. Herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, sage, anise or cayenne are believed to cause uterine contractions. However, they say that many of these are banned during pregnancy because they could cause a miscarriage.

That is, somehow there is the possibility that they are related to the stimulation of uterine contractions. As a precaution, it is preferable to limit the amounts consumed and always consult the opinion of experts.

2. Castor oil (or castor oil)

It’s understandable that you’re afraid to try this ingredient. But  the myth about castor oil is out of date. This product is obtained from a seed that is actually toxic, but its  oil has medicinal properties.

It is believed that castor oil can induce labor because it is able to cause contractions of the muscles of the intestine, causing cramps in the uterus and, consequently, triggering labor.

3. Spicy foods

Spicy food in some cases is contraindicated during pregnancy because of its relationship to stomach acidity or other gastric complications. However, although it is included in the list of foods that could initiate labor, there is no real evidence that it could work.

4. Pineapple

Pineapple has many properties. According to some mothers, it is also possible to add it to the list of foods that contribute to the baby’s arrival. An enzyme known as bromelain in fresh pineapple is thought to cause the cervix to lose stiffness.

However, despite this having some truth, it is known that the amount of bromelain present in pineapples is in fact very low. That is, a woman will have to eat large amounts of the fruit to at least be able to relax the bowel.

5. Raspberry leaves

The use of raspberry leaves is related to the preparation of infusions with relaxing properties. This implies that perhaps this relaxation effect allows a pregnancy to finally reach its final stretch by lowering stress levels. Such relaxation could therefore reach the uterus.

6. Garlic

Like aromatic herbs, garlic could achieve stimulation and movement of the fetus to its final position, suitable for birth. Eating garlic in sufficient quantities is one of the ways that has long been used to induce labor, whether it is a proven method or not.

7. A plant called Cohosh

It is not a very common herb around the world. It is a product of American origin, which is consumed in the form of tea. Apparently, Cohosh tea can cause moderate to strong contractions.

Although there is no scientific evidence to support this fact, it is best to be cautious and be in constant contact with our doctor.

Considerations before trying to induce labor

As we’ve said, most of the foods and supplements reported above that have labor-inducing properties have not been scientifically proven. Furthermore, it can be said that none of them has the support of any institution that has this under control.

Therefore, before venturing out and experimenting with techniques and/or products whose effects are unknown or pose a potential risk, it is better to limit the amounts and avoid their use in case of direct contraindication. Since, for the most part, alternative medicine is not recommended for pregnant women, you should always be in contact with specialists so as not to take unnecessary risks.

The decision to use these foods to induce labor is a personal one. However, we recommend that you opt for foods that we know can be harmless. For example, in the case of pineapple, there is no possibility that the quantities will be exceeded. Other products such as chocolate can also be consumed on a small scale.

The important thing is not to risk our health or that of our baby. The right time will already come. So, the ideal is to relax and wait for the time of delivery in total harmony and well-being.
